Celebrating World Autism Day!

Hello readers, and happy Wednesday! Today is an exciting day because it is World Autism Day! This day is devoted to celebrating individuals and families who have been impacted by Autism. For this week’s blog post, I am going to write about celebrating Autism Day by sharing the history behind Autism Day and why we celebrate today!

History of World Autism Day

First, let’s begin with a History lesson! April is known as Autism Awareness Month, and April 2nd is World Autism Day—a day for wearing blue! World Autism Day was developed in 2007 by the United Nations. It’s a day for celebrating individuals with a disorder that affects their social skills, communication, and behavior. It is a day for honoring those who are different, unique, and diverse!

Why do we celebrate World Autism Day?

Though today is Autism Day, we are not celebrating the disorder. What we are celebrating is our son and the challenges that he has overcome! We are celebrating the goals that my husband and I have accomplished despite how long it may have taken! We are celebrating making it through the traumatic experiences that we as a family have faced! To us, World Autism Day is about celebrating the ability to reach new heights, despite having Autism!

Our Experience celebrating Autism day

Even though this is our first time celebrating World Autism Awareness Day, having a son on the spectrum. It is not our first time celebrating Autism Day. My husband and I both have people who are dear to us on the spectrum. As we are becoming more aware of the concept of Autism we are finding that having Autism isn’t a bad thing and isn’t something that necessarily needs to be fixed but embraced. It is what makes us unique and special!

Conclusion

Today on World Autism Day whether you know someone on the spectrum or not. You can still raise awareness and celebrate those impacted by Autism. Not just today but every day! They deserve to be celebrated for their accomplishments and being overcomers! By celebrating we can create an inclusive world that honors and glorifies God! Because whether one is on the spectrum or not everyone is fearfully and wonderfully made!
