You may have read the title and and thought to yourself, where did that come from? For others you read the title and started singing knowing exactly where it is from. Hello readers and welcome to this weeks blog post! Since starting my blog last year a question I have received is, Why is there a watermelon in your logo? The answer, brings us to this weeks blog post.
For this weeks blog I am going to be writing about comfort foods. Specifically what my sons comfort foods are. Which based on the title and the picture is Fruit! By the way fruit salad yummy! yummy! is a song from my son’s favorite show.
To define what comfort foods are. Comfort foods like the name suggests gives comfort, complex right! Comfort foods are what we enjoy eating constantly. For kids on the spectrum comfort foods gives them a feeling in their mouth that offers a strong sensory input.
Ok Anna, fruit is so basic! Why are you blogging about fruit? Well fruit happens to be my sons comfort food. This is a big deal because for kids fruit is not their first choice for comfort food. Especially not for kids on the spectrum. When you think of comfort food you think of foods with sugar or carbs. But typically not fruit!
My sons favorite fruit is watermelon, which is the significance of the watermelon in the logo. Some other fruit he loves is strawberries, oranges, and grapes. The juicy fruit! Other than fruit some of his other comfort foods are fruit snacks and rice Krispy treats! Got to have a balance right!
Next to him having his comfort foods, what he also takes comfort in is how his food is served. What do you mean? To make a long story short, one day our family sat down to eat lunch and we gave our son his plate and he had a meltdown. Let me tell you it broke this mamas heart and I was confused. He had chicken nuggets and Cheetos before, why was he having a meltdown? I came to the realization that it was because the Cheetos and nuggets were touching. Since that day we have learned to keep his food separated at all times. Now we have plates that are sectioned and bowls that we put his fruit in.
While at first it was peculiar. This is just another detail of my son that we have learned to adapt to as parents. Its just what makes my son who he is, a boy who loves fruit and don’t like his food to touch. Though at times it may be a challenge to get my child to try new foods or to wonder if he will eat something ,such as spaghetti. At the end of the day what is a comfort to me as his mom is that he eats and he is healthy!
